Contemplative Spirituality
What Is Contemplative Spirituality?
For many queer people, a contemplative approach to spirituality can be profoundly healing. At Common Sanctuary, we believe the spiritual life can be distilled into three simple invitations: Come as you are. Experience God. See what happens.
Many of us have come from more conservative, high-control religious traditions where we were told what to think, what to believe, how to live, and even how to feel. We were warned not to trust ourselves, our feelings, or our bodies. Over time, these systems can leave us disconnected from our own deepest knowing and from the God who meets us in authenticity.
Contemplative spirituality offers another way. It invites us to slow down, to listen deeply, and to notice the presence of God in our ordinary lives. It encourages us to trust that God’s Spirit is already at work in every part of who we are, including the wisdom carried in our bodies. Through stillness, silence, prayer, and deep listening, we begin to reclaim that trust. Over time, we learn to recognize and honor the sacred voice within.
